Saved an Image and It's WebP? Here's How to Fix It
Published: 2026-10-06
You right-click an image on a website, choose “Save image as”, and the file ends in .webp. It looked like a normal picture in the browser, but now your editor won't open it, or an upload form says the format is not supported.
Why images save as WebP
Many websites serve images as WebP because the files are small and pages load faster. Browsers display WebP without any problem, so you never notice, but saving the image gives you the original WebP file.
When it becomes a problem
- Older image editors or viewers can't open it
- Office or design tools won't accept it
- An upload form only allows JPG or PNG
- The person you sent it to can't open it
The fix: convert to JPG or PNG
Convert the WebP file to JPG for photos, or to PNG for images with transparent backgrounds such as logos and icons. JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas become white.
- Open the WebP to JPG converter (or WebP to PNG).
- Drag in your .webp files. You can add several at once.
- Click “Convert” and download the results.
Why not just take a screenshot?
A screenshot saves what is on screen, usually at a lower resolution than the original and often with surrounding page elements. Converting keeps the original size and quality.
