When PNG to JPG makes sense

Screenshots and some camera or editing apps save photos as PNG. PNG is lossless, but photos with lots of color become very large. Converting a multi-megabyte PNG photo to JPG often cuts the size to a fraction while looking practically the same.

This is especially useful when you hit an email attachment limit, an upload size limit, or want to send several photos through a messaging app.

Screenshots full of text or graphics with sharp lines can look slightly soft as JPG. Keep the quality at 90% or higher for those, or stay with PNG. Transparent areas become white.

Frequently asked questions

›What is a PNG file?

PNG is a lossless image format that supports transparency. It is ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics, but photos saved as PNG can be very large.

›Why convert PNG to JPG?

JPG opens everywhere: Windows Photos, Microsoft Office, messaging apps and almost every upload form. Converting to JPG makes the image easy to share, print and edit.

›Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Conversion runs entirely in your browser using your own device. Your images never leave your computer or phone.

›What happens to transparent areas?

JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG instead.

›Which quality setting should I use?

90% is a good default that looks almost identical to the original. Choose 75–85% for noticeably smaller files, or 100% for maximum quality.

›Is there a limit on the number of files?

There is no fixed limit. Very large batches use more memory, so on older phones converting in groups of about 50 works best.
